Different types of discs
Nature has many different designs and therefore you need different discs that are suitable in different situations. There are three main types of discs: putter, midrange and driver. Driver can also be divided into two different groups: Fariway driver and distance driver. Putters are used at close range when you need a lot of flight ability, midrange at medium distances and drivers when you need to throw far.
In order to compare discs, many disc manufacturers use a 4-digit system that describes the disc's characteristics, Speed, Glide, Turn and Fade. Easily translated Speed, Glide, Turn and Finish. Please see our disc properties page for more in-depth information on this.
The designation that appears on many of the discs:
S=Speed , G= Glide, T= Turn, F= Fade
Various plastics
There are many different types of plastics to choose from. In the beginning, it is most important to concentrate on your swing and master your first drives. You can concentrate on which plastic your disc has when you get into throwing. Then a whole world of new possibilities and exciting discs to test opens up.
Cheap plastic: Often have the same properties as the slightly more expensive ones, but a plastic that is easily damaged and the lifespan of the disc may be a little shorter.
More expensive plastics: Usually more grip friendly, not as easy to drop the disc in your swing and usually a bit longer life.
Then of course there is a plethora of plastics in between, for example plastics that still stay soft even in cold weather such as in winter. Please see the plastic guide for good descriptions of each type of plastic.
Concentrate on the throw
Be sure to focus on getting your pitching going in the beginning. The main thing is that you have fun, then the rest will take care of itself. Test different ways of throwing and holding the disc and find the technique that suits you.
